Individuals working in agriculture are exposed to many different respiratory hazards – dust, chemicals, animal dander, microorganisms, organic matter, mold, diesel fumes and more. As a result, respiratory disease is the leading illness among farmers.
N.C. Cooperative Extension is partnering with Cleveland County Farm Bureau to provide a Farm Safety Program that is open to farm families and pesticide applicators. The program is scheduled for Wednesday, February 28 at 6 p.m. in the NC Cooperative Extension Auditorium, 130 South Post Road, Shelby, NC 28152 and includes a meal sponsored by Cleveland County Farm Bureau.
Jessica Wilburn, RN with the North Carolina Agromedicine Institute will discuss the importance of protecting your respiratory health and ways to reduce risk. Her presentation will focus on knowing what type of respiratory protection is required for the task that you, your workers and/or family members will be doing. She will also address the medical clearance, respirator fit test process, and training on respirator use and care required by the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Worker Protection Standard for pesticide applicators.
The program provides 1 hour of pesticide applicator continuing education credits for categories N, O, D, and X.
